The very first commission consortium through the Repertoire Expansion Project is in collaboration with Mica Redden (they/them). Mica is a composer and horn player currently based out of Indiana, and you can learn more about them here.
Mica’s piece, Honk!, is described below:
This piece presents a unique blend of musical styles that range from son montuno to funk with a light dusting of bossa nova sprinkles. The Tuba alternates between the roles of a string bass providing a stabilizing, rhythmic foundation and a saxophone floating on top of the “changes” throughout the more quasi-improvised, melodic sections. Serving as a study in ear training and flexibility, Honk! offers rhythmic and harmonic challenges that are sure to thrill any crowd.
Honk! will become available to the public on December 31, 2023.
